2024 Term 2 Week 10
Dear Parents & Carers,
As we reflect on the completion of Term Two, it is important to express gratitude to all those who have contributed to its success. Students, parents, and staff have played crucial roles in making this term a highlight both academically and socially.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the parents and carers who have been actively involved in supporting our students through various events such as the St Joseph's Movie Night, community council meetings, Mother's Day stall, and volunteering in the canteen. Your presence and participation have truly made a difference.
Our dedicated staff members deserve special recognition for their unwavering commitment to providing quality education and support to our students. Their hard work goes beyond the normal working hours as they meticulously plan lessons, engage in professional development activities, and assist in organising various extracurricular activities such as SRC, Sacramental preparation, excursions ans sport.
I want to acknowledge our students for their positive attitude and willingness to adhere to school rules while embodying the values of Jesus every day. Their behaviour sets a shining example for others and contributes greatly to the overall success of our school community.
We wish our staff and students a well earned break and look forward to all students returning on Wednesday 24th July 2024.
Public Speaking-Y3-6
Early next term our students from Year 3-6 have the opportunity to represent St Joseph's at the Northern Region Public Speaking Competition. St Joseph's students have set a very high standard in this competition in past years and we look forward to witnessing similar quality speeches in

Peer Support
This Friday our senior year 5 and 6 students will be trained as leaders for our Term Three Peer Support Program.
This program offers better connectedness and strategies for:
• improved resilience
• shared identity and acceptance
• increased self-confidence
• the value of helping others
• developing and sharing skills
• emotional resilience and wellbeing.
Our senior students will lead a group of from Kinder to Year Four each Friday of next term. Thankyou Mrs. McNamara and Stage 3 teachers for preparing the students for training and beyond.
Tissues
A reminder to all our parents and carers as our cold weather continues could you please send in a box of tissues with your children as we are using a lot of them at the
moment. Please remind your children of good hygiene habits; blowing our nose, throwing the tissue in the bin and washing hands.
Reporting guidelines
A Semester Report will be accessible via COMPASS this Friday providing ‘A-E grading for Key Learning Areas and ‘engagement with learning’ summary. CECG has advised schools that a general comment will not be included in Semester 1, Term 2, 2024 reports.
Semester 2, Term 4, 2024 reports will include a general comment for all K-6 reports.
This general comment in Term 4 will be a summative comment for the whole year, including areas of achievement and areas to focus on for 2024.
I read an informative article for parents to consider when opening the report with your child -
''• Do a little self-check to see if you are in the right frame of mind before sitting down with your child to discuss the report
• Reports can mean anxious times for children too. Will my parents be disappointed or proud… This is the main concern of most children. Children of all ages take their cues
from their parents, so your reaction to their school report can affect the way they see themselves as learners and as people.
• Are your expectations for your child realistic and in line with their ability.. Expectations are tricky. If they are too high then your child could be turned off learning. Too low and there is nothing to strive for.
• Pitch your expectations in line with your child’s abilities.
• Children learn at different rates. There are slow bloomers, late developers and steady- as-you-go kids in every classroom, so avoid comparing your child to
siblings, your friends’ children and even yourself when you were a child. Instead look for individual progress.
• Are you willing to safeguard your child’s self-esteem rather than deflate it… Selfconfidence is a pre-requisite for learning, so be prepared to be as positive and encouraging as possible.
• Focus on strengths. Do you look for strengths or weaknesses first?
• Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning. If the report indicates that effort is below standard, then you have something to work on. If your child is putting in the required effort, then you cannot ask any more than that, regardless of the grading.
• Broaden your focus away from academic performance to form a picture of your child’s progress as a member of a social setting. How your child gets along with his or her
peers will influence his happiness and well-being, as well as give an indicator to his future.
• The skills of independence and co-operation are highly valued so don’t dismiss these as unimportant.
• Take note of student self-assessment. Children are generally very honest and will give a realistic assessment of their progress. Discuss the report talking about strengths first before looking at areas that need improvement. Ask for their opinion about how they performed and discuss their concerns.
• After reports are read and discussed celebrate your child’s efforts with a special activity or treat. In this way you will recognise progress!''

Mark 6:1-6 Jesus is rejected in his hometown.
Jesus is hampered from performing miracles in Nazareth because of the people’s lack of faith. Jesus is said to be surprised by this. He did not predict or foresee this rejection. In this detail we find a description of the very human side of Jesus. Who is Jesus? His kinfolk in Nazareth might know the carpenter, the son of Mary, but they do not know Jesus, the Son of God. Mark is foreshadowing Jesus’ rejection by his own people, the people of Israel.
Mini Vinnies Winter Sleep-Out
Our Winter Sleep-Out is scheduled for Friday 2nd - Saturday 3rd August. A Compass permission note went out last week, with more specific details. The Winter Sleep-Out is an optional event for any of our Yr 6 Mini Vinnies, and helps to raise money for the Goulburn Chapter of St Vincent de Paul.
It is a fun experience to gather together, increase awareness of homelessness in all its forms and meet people from St Vincent de Paul who help those less forntunate. The event starts at 6pm Friday, and finishes 8am Saturday; accommodations can be made for students who may need to arrive late or leave early due to commitments, or students who want to experience the evening activities but go home prior to lights out. Any queries can be directed to sasha.cady@cg.catholic.edu.au .
Sacrament of Confirmation
The enrolment night for the sacrament of Confirmation will be held at 6.00pm on Thursday 8 August at Our Lady of Fatima. This will be for Year 6 and above students.

Marcus Attard, Yr 6, has made his Sacrament of Confirmation while in Malta, with his family. While the Mass was spoken in Maltese, the Bishop was lovely and spoke to Marcus in English during the blessing. it was still a beautiful service, and very different from what we experience in Australia.

Canteen News
Our school canteen is open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Orders need to be placed by Qkr! before 8:30am on the day of order.
Whilst we understand accidents happen it does place a large strain on our canteen and office staff to assist in these situations.
To try to avoid this, please follow some of the steps below:
- How to order – place your order using the Qkr! app or write on a paper bag and send the order in with your child.
- Order on the app and confirm the date that you have selected is for the day you require.
- If your child is selecting the food please check it before you confirm the order (we now need to limit garlic bread to students as some were ordering up to 10 in one order)
- If your child is absent and no longer is required to receive the order please cancel prior to 8:30am on the day of order.
You can receive a Qkr credit note if you tap on the 3 lines at the top left of the home screen, select ‘my receipts’ and then select the order you wish to cancel. - If your child doesn’t have a lunch and they realise before 10:00am a phone call will be made to parents to ask them to bring lunch to school for them.
If you are unable we will provide your child with a basic sandwich (vegemite or cheese) and an IOU envelope will be sent home. - IOU’s - if your child brings home an IOU envelope please either return the envelope with cash payment or alternatively you can pay for it via Qkr using the “Canteen Outstanding Amounts”
- If you are unaware of the amount currently outstanding to your child please email canteen.sjglb@cg.catholic.edu.au and we can advise.
- There is a limit of $10 for over the counter purchases. Please do not send your child in with more than this as we will not accept $50 or $20 notes.
If you need to contact the school about lunch orders, please email canteen.sjglb@cg.catholic.edu.au or contact the school office 4821 3510 before 9:30 am.
If you are able to volunteer in the canteen please contact the office or email the canteen.sjglb@cg.catholic.edu.au with your availability.
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers, we really do appreciate your time.

SPECIAL REPORT: Celebrating NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities. NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.
